Remuneration Packages up to $110,000
The Commonwealth Deportment of Employment. Education ond 'raining admin
isters a range of employment, education ond training programs and provides
policy and labou- market odvice relevant to these functional interests. The
Department, including the Commonwealth Employment Service, comprises over
12,000 staff acros:. Ausrrolio and odministers a budget of well over $9 billion.
The Deportment is seeking highly effective Senior Executives to head two of its
Divisions. Doth positions are designated First Assistant Secretory. The Student and
Aboriginal Programs Divison has key responsibility for implementation and review
of Aboriginal policies and programs in respect of employment, education and
training matters, including those orislng out of the findings of the Royol Commission
into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. The Division also administers student assistance,
including AUSTUDY ond ADSTUDY.
The Employment Programs and Services Division is responsible for the development
ond management of labour market programs ond broad oversight of operational
policy for the Commonwealth Employment Service, the Youth Oureau and the
Office of Labour Market Adjustment. The Division is heovily involved'm operational
planning, strategic analysis, information technology ond o range of other corporate
support services for these networks.
Applicants for the positions should po'sess highly developed management ond
leadership abilities and high level policy and representational skills.
Salary and Conditions of Service: The successful applicant will be offered a career
appointment to the Senior Executive Service of the Australian Public Service. A
fixed term appointment of up to five years may be offered should such on
arrangement be suitable to both the Department and the appointee.
An attractive remuneration package includes o salary component of $79,955 pa
plus allowances including private use of o vehicle, and access to o Common
wealth-sponsored superannuation scheme. No part of the non-salary component
of the package can be converted to salary.
Conditions of service include four weeks onnuol leave with bonus payment,
cumulative sick leave benefits, long service leove after ten yeats continuous
service and the contributory superannuation scheme. To be eligible for appoint
ment opplicants must be Australian citizens; however applicants with permanent
resident status who hove applied, or intend to apply, for Australian citizenship
may be oppointed on probation pending the granting of citizenship.

ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION

The Department invites applications for a new position to assist the
Secretary in providing advice to the Minister and in gtving effect to the
Government's intention to create a Commonwealth Environment Protec
tion Agency.
The successful applicant will oversight the creation of the Agency and
the establishment of arrangements for environment protection with the
States and Territories.
The successful applicant will be expected to have a good understanding
of the technical and scientific issues, proven policy advising, management
and negotiation skills, and to have a clear understanding of the way
environment protection activities will have to relate to the Australian
systems of government.

The suitability of applicants for the position will be assessed against

A fixed term appointment of two years in the first instance will be offered
to the successful applicant.
The successful applicant will be required to meet Australian Public
Service entry conditions for a fixed term appointment. Fixed term

have permanent resident status may be appointed on probation pending
the granting of citizenship.
A comprehensive Australian Public Service conditions package is avail
able and includes four weeks annual leave and cumulative sick leave.
Successful applicants will have the use of a fully maintained car, subject
to a prescribed contribution, and be entitled to other specific benefits. It
is not possible to convert all or part of the non-salary component of the
package to salary.

Scheme
1992 Admission
The Spccial Adult Entry Scheme provides a means of
entry to undergraduate study at The Australian National
University for those who do not currently possess formal
qualifications and who are aged 23 or over by
31 December 1991.
If you have
. completed Year 12 qualifications since 1982. or
. completed a diploma or certificate course since 1982.
or
. certain professional qualifications
you may already be eligible for admission. Please contact
the Admissions Office to make sure of this.
You are not eligible to apply through this scheme, if.
within the last three years, you have either unsuccess
fully attempted degree level studies at a university or
college of advanced education, or unsuccessfully
attempted the Spccial Adult Entry Scheme. If this is the
case, you may wish to consider alternatives such as the
University Preparation Scheme. Further information on
these schemes is available from the Admissions Office.
Selection for entry under the Special Adult Entry
Scheme is based on performance in an essay and a
scholastic aptitude test, both to be undertaken at the
University on Saturday, 26 October 1991.
Applications for entry in 1992 through the Special Adult
Entry Scheme must be submitted by no later than
Friday, 27 September 1991. No applications will be
accepted after that date.
The University offers single and combined first degree
courses in the Faculties of Arts, Asian Studies, Econom
ics and Commerce, Law, and Science. Entry' to the
Faculties of Law and Economics and Commerce is very
competitive particularly for entrants through special
entry schemes. Applicants considering applying for Eco
nomics, Commerce and Information Technology courses
are advised to make enquiries about the mathematics
requirements for these courses. Applicants considering
Engineering courses are strongly advised not to seek
admission through the SAES but to seek a means of
entry which offers a sound background in the subject
prerequisites, eg Year 12 qualifications, including math
ematics and physics.
