Champion sets a course record in defence of her title
Defending champion Jocelyn Mackay
of Moss Vale set a course record 74 at
Queanbeyan last week on her way to
back-to-back wins in the ACT Women's
Open Amateur Championship.
The previous record of 76 was estab
lished when the re-vamped course was
opened for play late last year.
Mackay had a two-round total of 154
to score a seven-shot victory over M.
Barnes of Cromer who finished on 161.
The winning score by Mackay was ex
actly the same she recorded in winning
the event last year. On that occasion she
shot 78-76. This time it was 80-74.
The event proved a strong attraction
with more than 490 entries from NSW
and the ACT district.
Conditions proved conducive to con
sistent scoring although scores indicated
players handled Queanbeyan much better
in the second round. Scores were a little
higher in the opening round at Federal.
Una Whyte, of Yowani, won the Seat
of Government Cup awarded for the best
net in Bronze division.

The foursomes event was won by the
mother-daughter combination of M. So
mcrs and M. Kennedy of Parkes with 80.
Mrs Somers also won the handicap sec
tion of Silver division with 142.
Presentations were held at the Belcon
nen Club on Wednesday at the comple
tion of the foursomes.
Competition was conducted in five di
visions with events being held at different
courses in Canberra and Queanbeyan.
□ ROYAL CANBERRA wrapped up the
A grade pennant competition last week
end with a comfortable 5-2 win over Yass
at Belconnen. Trailing Belconnen by a
narrow margin in matches won and lost,
Royal Canberra needoi only to beat Yass
to take the title.
With Belconnen having the bye, the
only danger to Royal Canberra was Yow
ani which, with a 6-1 win over Goulburn,
could have pinched top spot had Yass
caused an upset.
Federal brought off a minor upset by
downing Queanbeyan 4-3.
Players from all teams praised the con
dition of the course after the day's play.
Special mention was made of the greens
which played fast and true.
One thing for the DGA committee to
peruse before the next pennant competi
tion is the idea of playing the competition
on neutral courses. Unanimous opinion
among players was that neutral courses
was a failure and that it should return to
the home-and-away format.
Both Goulburn and Yass were placed
at a disadvantage with continual travel.
□ THERE WAS an exciting Finish to the
Spalding Cup competition on Sunday
with the top two teams playing one an
other at Fairbairn.
Queanbeyan went into the final round
with a one-point advantage over Yowani
and held on to win after battling out a
V/i-Vh result with its main rival.
In other matches Federal beat Capital
4-3 while Royal Canberra and Belconnen
finished 3V2-3V2.
□ A RECORD field of 141 players, in
cluding 11 associates, has entered for the
13th annual Queanbeyan City Junior
Open to be held on Sunday.
Queanbeyan has a strong representa
tion in both divisions with entries com
ing from all district clubs as well as
Mollymook, Highlands, Moruya, Catali
na, Orange, Wentworth, Port Kembla
and Springwood. Players will hit off from
both tees from 1 lam.
□ QUALIFYING ROUNDS for the
ACT Secondai7 Schools Championship
will be played in zones.
The Woden zone will be played at Cap
ital on May 23 while the Belconnen zone
will be held at Belconnen on June 6.
Entries for Woden zone close tomor
row and for Belconnen on Friday, May
31.
Dunng this competition, qualifying
rounds will also be held for the Helliers
Shield, which involves teams. Three
teams from each zone will progress to the
ACT Championships, to be held possibly
at Fairbairn on June 26.
Each winning team will be decided by
stroke play, the team with the lowest
gross score winning.
□ THE CHARITY Day for the Muscular
Dystrophy Association of Canberra held
at Murnimbidgee Country Club on Mon
day was a success with about $5000 being
raised.
All participants enjoyed the day with
