ASSISTS ...
THE new breed of rookies certainly
have some novel ideas and al
though it makes some of their
older teammates jealous, they seem to be
enjoying themselves. For instance, on a
cold Canberra morning what better way
to keep ones hands warm than by having
someone hold them for you? To this end,
Cannons Michael Barlow and Alex He
tenyi had, respectively, fellow basketball
ers Jodie Murphy (AIS Pumas) and
Narelle McConnell (Capitals) along to
see them off and keep them warm. So
cute.
□ THE CANNONS have had some
dedicated fans over the years but two of
the most ardent must surely be Val and
Karen Urbani. They spent many, many
hours on bus and train to see their team
go around in Geelong and Melbourne
over the weekend.
□ SOUTHERN SAINTS media liaison
man and former Saints' coach Dean
Templeton entered a pick the score and
margin sweep before Saturday's game
and took the Cannons to win by four. He
also asked the organiser of the sweep not
"to say anything" if he won.
□ AS A result of a very (generous spon
sorship by WIN Television, tickets for
Phil Smyth's Tribute Lunch at Parlia
ment House on Monday, May 27, have
been reduced to $50. Further informa
tion can be obtained by telephoning
Melissa Kershaw at the Cannons office
on 241 5199.
□ BASKETBALL FANS will be out in
force on Friday night at the Ramblers
Gub reunion. A number of things have
been planned including a function on
Friday night at the Yarralumla Wool
shed. A live band and supper will be
provided from 7pm to the wee smalls
and further information can be obtained
by telephoning Shauna Loutit on
288 9566 (h) or 289 6508 (w).
□ IT SEEMS Tad Duilemeier is con
founding a new set of people with the
spelling of his surname. Probably the
most consistently wrongly-spelled name
in the league appeared on Saturday
when his playing singlet bore the name,
Dufilemeier.
□ EVEN WHILE recovering from illness
it appears that Phil Smyth can't keep out
of trouble. Although wife Jennifer did
not yell at him too much when she dis
covered that he had eaten the box of
chocolates that he found in his kitchen at
home— the same box she had intended
giving to someone as a gift. "I checked
with quite a few people," Smyth said,
"and they all told me that if they found a
box of chocolates in their kitchen, in
their house and they were hungry, they
would have eaten them as well".
□ SCOTT FISHER'S 56 points in the
Giants' 156-130 win against on Hobart
on Saturday was a club record for an
individual. It was Ave more than the
score registered by Bennie Lewis in
1984 and it was nine points better than
Fisher's previous best.
