Old Boys too
good in
rugby sevens
By GEOFF HAWKE
Good Old Boys won the Schweppes-Rudes Night
club East rugby union sevens tournament at Griffith
Oval yesterday, beating Manly in the final, 20-18.
A composite team mostly of players from Sydney's
Southern Districts, they led 16-6 at the break after
scoring three tries to one.
But with $ 1500 and the Quaigh Cup at stake, Manly
made a bold comeback in the second half, scoring three
consecutive tries to lead for the first time with five
minutes left.
Good Old Boys then found their second wind to
score a minute later and grab a two-point buffer.
Manly had its chance to clinch victory one minute
from time but a penalty goal shot was waved astray.
Wests were the best local team. They missed a place
in the final Manly after drawing 10-10 with Good Old
Boys in their semi-final. But Good Old Boys progressed
because they had scored first.
Wests notched the highest number of tries (18) up to
and including the quarter-final and team member Matt
O'Connor was judged best local in the tournament.
The "repcchage" Derriere Cup went to Canberra
composite team Renegades One, which beat Randwick
B40-8.
Renegades' Jim Swan was declared best and fairest in
that competition, while David Furner, also of Rene
gades, was the tournament's highest scorer (42 points).
Good Old Boys' Brian Parcel was named best and
fairest player of the day.
