TEL AVIV: A senior US legislator warned
Iraq yesterday of massive destruction if it harm-
ed any American held in Iraq or occupied-Ku-
wait.
Stephen Solarz, a senior member of the House
of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee,
issued the warning following an Iraqi order for
all US and British citizens in Kuwait to assemble
at downtown hotels (see right).
"I trust the word has been passed to Iraq that
if any American citizen in Kuwait or Iraq under
the control or detention of Iraqi authorities is in
any way brutalised, tortured or killed, the Unit-
ed States will retaliate against Iraq in a way
which will result in the destruction of the mili-
tary and economic infrastructure of that coun-
try."
Solarz, a Democrat who has been mentioned
as a possible future secretary of state, spoke to
reporters after three days of meetings in Israel
"[Iraqi President] Saddam Hussein cannot be
permitted to succeed," said Solarz, 49. He said
accepting Iraq's annexation of Kuwait would
threaten the US economy and destabilise the
Middle East.
