Only a disaster can stop
Rainey taking the title
ANDERSTORP, Sweden: Califor
nian Wayne Rainey won the Swedish
500cc motorcycling grand prix on Sun
day to clinch' the world championship
- barring disaster.
But Rainey, whose world champion
ship hopes last year vanished after a
crash at Anderstorp, wiped out the bad
memories of that race.
Kevin Schwantz, Rainey's sole rival
for the title, crasiied on the third lap to
give Rainey a 'virtually unassailable 47
point lead with just three races - and
60 points - remaining.
Rainey's victory means he has only to
finish one more grand prix in third
place to win his first world title, even if
Schwantz wins all remaining races.
Schwantz, who made a poor start
from pole position, came out only fifth
from the first bend, while Rainey and
teammate Eddie Lawson swept through.
Lawson was happy to spend the rest
of the race protecting Rainey from the
challenges of Australia's Wayne Gard
ner, who had to settle for third place.
