ACT premier
a knockout
in $25,000
competition
By DEVAN HANNAN
West Bclconncn stormed through to the
second round of the $25,000 Carlton West
Wyalong rugby-league knockout on Satur
day night with a 44-0 thumping of Leeton
at Ron Crowe Oval, West Wyalong.
The ACTRL Toohcys Molonglo Shield
premier ran in eight tries and led the
Group 20 side 22-0 at half-time.
Warriors hooker Darren Webster, who
scored a try, was named man of the match
after a busy display around the rucks.
Other try-scorers were half Gary Kingh
am, lock Peter Donohoe, winger Chris
Kinna, centres Brad Mansfield and Tony
Adam, and replacements Craig Cornelson,
a former Leeton player, and Dean Cro
combe.
The ACT premier now will meet on
Friday night Temora, captain-coached by
Country Rugby League legend Les Cleal.
But the Warriors will be without experi
enced prop Gary Williams, who broke a
bone in his upper-arm.
Meanwhile, Bclconncn United secretary
Gary Champion said a player shortage was
not the reason behind his club's withdraw
al from the John Braddon Management
Nine-a-Sidc Knockout, won by Queanbe
yan Kangaroos on Saturday.
He said the Sharks did not officially
nominate for the knockout and he was not
sure who authorised their inclusion in the
| original draw.
It is believed conveners had received a
verbal acceptance from the Sharks. But a
communication breakdown meant it was
not until Friday the conveners learned the
Sharks would not be taking part.
"tye didn't intend entering the Nines,
because it didn't suit us as a pre-season
trial," Champion said. "We'd prefer the
whole club to play.
The acquisition of former Canberra
Raiders, North Sydney and Eastern Sub
urbs three-quarter Steve Keir has attracted
several players to the club, a bonus for
coach Brian Bourke's aim to mould it into
a final-four contender.
