NEW DELHI: Mohammed Azharud
din became India's third cricket captain
in the past four months when he was
named yesterday to lead the side on the
three-test tour of New Zealand starting
later this month.
He takes over from opener Krishna
machari Srikkanth, who led India in the
recent four-test series in Pakistan. All
of the tests were drawn.
When announcing Azharuddin's ap
pointment, the Indian selectors cited
Srikkanth's poor form in Pakistan and
his decision not to play domestic cricket
since his return as reasons for replacing
him.
Srikkanth took over the captaincy in
October from Dilip Vengsarkar, who
led India on last year's tour of West
Indies. They lost the test series 4-0.
Azharuddin, who turns 27 next
month, has been a regular member of
the Indian side since the 1983-4 season
when he made a spectacular debut in
the home series against England, scor
ing centuries in his first three tests.
He has scored 2124 runs, including
seven centuries, in 34 tests at an aver
age of 44.25.
The New Zealand tour party is due to
be named on Monday.
