Tigers qualify
over Eastlake
By BARRY ROLLINGS
Queanbeyan qualified for
the ACT Australian Football
League's Foster's pre-season
competition final with an 86
point win over Eastlake yes
terday.
The Hunny Bunny Tigers
won 21.18 (144) to 9.4 (58) at
Queanbeyan's Margaret Don
oghoe Sportsground and
though the scoreboard indi
cated an easy win similar to
round one against Ainslie, it
was not.
Queanbeyan will play Bel
connen Magpies, who quali
fied with a 15.7 (97) to 8.15
(63) victory over Tuggeranong
yesterday at Football Park,
Phillip. They will meet at
Phillip at 7.15pm, preceded at"
5.15pm by reserve-grade be
tween Ainslie and ANU.
Eastlake showed more grit
and combination than Quean
beyan though fading out of
contention when the game
slipped beyond its reach in the
final term.
It paid dearly for a slow
start and when Queanbeyan
turned in a slick 7.2 (44) to 2.0
(12) first quarter.
Eastlake had trouble break
ing across the half-forward
line in the first term but
showed better combination in
the second to fight its way
back into the game to trail 7.3
(45) to 10.7 (67) at half time.
Queanbeyan had been
quick to pick up its oppo
nents, capitalise on poor dis
posal and keep Eastlake off
balance in the first quarter but
it was only in the last five
minutes before half-time that
it rallied to add two more
goals.
That was the pattern for
most of the game.
The third quarter was fairly
even until Queanbeyan broke
away in the last four minutes
to kick three of its 5.4 for the
quarter.
That seemed to break East
lake's spirit as Queanbeyan
romped home with another
six goals without reply. A sour
note for the Tigers was the
taking of Mark Briant's num
ber by umpire Andrew Toy,
apparently for striking. '
For Queanbeyan Ian Male
and Darren Walton stood out
in attack, while Darryl Bell
garnered five and Phil Mc
Clure did his best work in the
.first quarter for three of his
four. Others to show out for
the Tigers were little men
Geoff Dceble, Peter Sculley
and Barry Suckling, and Mark
Thompson in defence.
For Eastlake Jerry Turner
made the most of his chances
in attack with six goals. Gal
lop did much to initiate the
Eagles' revival in the second
term and was clearly one of its
best until taken from the field
injured during the third quar
ter.
Captain-coach Neil Plem
ing worked hard to drive East
lake into attack, Grant Carrol
did some good work and of
the younger brigade Damian
Lewis, Ian McCurdy and Ja
son Elias showed promise.
In the other game at Phillip,
Ainslie beat Manuka Weston
12.12 (84) to 9.10 (64).
Swans soar as Eagles plunge
PERTH: The Sydney Swans
confirmed their status as the
form team of the expanded Vic
torian Football League yesterday
with a convincing 27-point win
over the West Coast Eagles at
Subiaco oval in Perth.
The Swans came from behind
in the last term to swarm over the
tiring Eagles and run out victors
18.16(124)to 14.13(97). .
The score did not reflect how
tight and torrid the match was for
most of the 120 minutes.
The Swans had the better of a
hectic first term but their eight
point lead at the break turned
into a 17-point deficit lOmininto
the second quarter.
The Swans steadied to claw
their way back into the match
and regain a three-point lead at
halftime with a running goal by
David Murphy in time-on.
The Eagles dominated most of
the third term to be 10 points
clear at three-quarter-time.
Swan Brownlow medallist
Greg Williams sparked their last
term revival, after being quiet
early in the match, generating
countless opportunities from the
centre.
Sydney's glamour spearhead,
Warwick Capper, took full ad
vantage of the bombardment and
finished the match with five
goals, including three in the last
term, and could have been fur
ther in front on the league goalk
icking ladder if not for some easy
misses earlier in the match as he
showed too much pace and class
for Eagles fullback Michael O'
Connell.
Swans veteran defender Ian
Roberts, was a constant spring
board and earned the player-of
the-match title.
The Eagles skipper, Ross Glen
denning, was a rock at centre
half-back and his weary legs and
powerful hands stopped what
could have been a last term ava
lanche.
Swans coach, Tom Hafey, was
delighted with the win and ad
mitted he was concerned at
three-quarter-time.
Eagles coach Ron Alexander
said his side wasied many oppor
tunities.
Alexander must now pick his
side up for Tuesday night's Na
tional Panasonic final in Mel
bourne against Gssenden. He was
critical of the draw, which will
see the Eagles fly home again on
Wednesday and then return to
Melbourne on Friday for Satur
day's match against Carlton.
