Clanchy off to Britain
Selection in the Australian Universities
hockey team for next month's Universiade
Games in Sheffield, England, will give
ACT goalkeeper David Clanchy his first
trip out of Australia.
Along with ACT teammate Kevin Ball,
Clanchy will be making his first appear
ance in a national team which leaves Aus
tralia on July 7.
The pair is in the 16-man team to con
test the 10-day tournament.
After five years playing senior hockey in
Canberra, Clanchy is looking forward to
making the trip.
"It came as a bit of a surprise," Clanchy
said.
"I hadn't really thought about it but it
should be good experience.
"Most of the other teams have had the
advantage of playing together quite a lot
while we have had little contact.
"We go into a camp in Sydney on July 6
then leave on the 7th. Our first game is not
until the 14th so I guess we will have some
time to try and develop some system in
our play although it is still going to be
pretty tough."
The team, to be coached by former Aus- •
tralian representative Ken Read, of Tas
mania, has earned its place in the Games
because it is highly ranked.
Canberra will also have two representa
tives in the women's team, Gail Cross and
Megan Metropolous.
