GOLF
Grady shades
Marsh
BRISBANE: Wayne Grady, of
Queensland, played mechanical
golf yesterday to head off a charge
by Graham Marsh for the third
round lead in the $30,000 Dunhill
Queensland Open at Royal
Queensland.
Grady defied Marsh's challenge with
a hat-trick of birdies on the back nine,
to finish the third round on 211, five
under, and one ahead of Marsh.
"If I'm the winner tomorrow it's only
because I'm putting better than the
rest," Grady said, minutes after a
scrambling par to hold the lead on the
18th.
Marsh and Grady were locked at four
under after producing crowd-pleasing
birdies before a big gallery at the 15th
hole.
Marsh blasted out of a greenside
bunker for his 45-metre birdie and
Grady replied by knocking in a 10
metre putt.
Grady took his third-round winning
lead by rolling in a four-metre birdie
putt at the 17th.
Marsh was happy with his third
round 70, although he said two bad
shots at the 10th and 14th holes had
probably cost him the lead.
Grady (70-71), John Victorsen
(72-69) and Stewart Ginn (69-72)
started yesterday's round in the lead on
141, three under for the tournament.
But only Grady survived the third
round pressures.
Victorsen struggled to a two-over-par
74 to be on 215, one under, and sharing
third place with Rob McNaughton
(71-75-69), George Serhan (74-70-71)
and Rob Stephens (72-70-73).
Roger Davis let down a large gallery
with an uncustomary round of 79 which
included three double bogeys and four
bogeys.
Bob Shaw had a round of 75, which
puts him two over for the tournament
and seven shots from the lead.
