SYDNEY: A man had broken
into a Sydney sports store intending
to steal a gun so that he could hold
the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser,
hostage, Paddington Petty Sessions
was told yesterday.
The court was told that Mr Egbert
Shaap, unemployed, of no fixed ad
dress, intended to point a gun at Mr
Fraser.
Mr Waller, SM, was told that Mr
Shaap had said he wanted to set up an
air force to bomb cities and to form a
liberation army to free Jews in
Palestine.
"I wanted to get a band of desper
adoes with a bit of guts", Mr Shaap
allegedly said in a police interview.
Sergeant Peter Freeman, prose
cuting, said Mr Shaap broke into Mick
Simmons store in George Street two
months ago.
Constable John Doran was shot in the
foot as Mr Shaap fired a "barrage" of
pellets at a police vehicle outside the
store, the court was told.
Mr Shaap was charged with mali
ciously wounding Constable Doran,
shooting with intent to do grievous
bodily harm and shooting to prevent
arrest at Sydney on August 25.
He was also chargcd with breaking
and entering Mick Simmons Pty Ltd
with intent to steal and maliciously
injuring plate glass windows, clothing,
rifles, ammunition and sporting equip
ment.
No pleas were entered.
Mr Shaap sat in the dock guarded by
four policemen. At an earlier court
appearance he had tried to escape by
vaulting the dock.
The hearing will continue.
