COURT REPORTS
Arson more prevalent: judge
MELBOURNE: A Melbourne judge
said yesterday that arson was becoming
more prevalent in "these times of de
pression".
He was imposing sentence on a
furniture manufacturer, Mr Henry
Schrieber, of East Bentleigh, who had
admitted setting fire to a factory to
obtain money from an insurance com
pany.
Mr Schrieber allegedly claimed
S63,000 after setting fire to the factory
in Cheltenham in September, 1979.
He pleaded guilty in the County
Court of two counts of arson and one
of perjury.
Judge O'Shea said Mr Schrieber did
not have much liquid capital and was
experiencing financial difficulties.
He had decided to burn the factory
he was leasing by setting alight two
drums of petrol early on a Saturday
morning. He had damaged the factory
as well as two neighboring buildings.
"Arson is becoming prevalent now in
these times of depression and those who
embark on arson seeking large gain
must know if they are caught they will
be dealt with seriously by the court,"
the judge said.
However, Mr Schrieber seemed to
have rehabilitated himself and he would
be lenient in his judgment. He sen
tenced Mr Schrieber to 18 months'jail
and ordered that he serve a minimum
of nine months.
