Deafness Council
welcomes Teletext
The Australian Deafness Council has welcomed
the Government's decision to approve the use of the
British Teletext system by Australian TV stations.
A spokesman for the
council said it was particu
larly appropriate that the
Minister for Communica
tions, Mr Brown, an
nounced the decision on
Sunday, the opening day of
Deafness Awareness
Week.
The decision opens the
way for wide provision of
instant information ser
vices through television, in
cluding news bulletins,
weather reports, transport
timetables, stockmarket
reports, and sports results.
The chief executive of
Capital 7, Mr Bill Rayner,
said on Sunday that the
system would be instalted
at his station as soon as
possible.
