60,000 rock fans well behaved
SYDNEY: An estimated crowd of
60,000 fans at the Narara rock festival
shunned violence and misbehaviour at
the weekend for the pleasures of loud
rock music.
Police said there had been little
trouble at the festival held on a 500
hectare site, near Gosford, and or-
ganisers said the crowd was "in-
credibly" well behaved.
Inspector Charles Rose, of Gosford
police, said that "everyone seemed to
be enjoying themselves in their own
way".
Only one outbreak of violence was
reported at the festival after a security
guard knocked out a fan after he had
attempted to gain entry into a restrict-
ed area on Saturday.
Some fans skinny-dipped in a
nearby lake as temperatures rose to
more than 30 degrees and, at night,
bikini-clad girls and men in shorts
sang along with their favourite bands.
One reason for the good crowd
behaviour was attributed to the re-
striction of drinking outlets and the
confiscation of alcoholic drinks as
people entered the site.
The only alcohol sold at the festival
was a considerable distance from the
camping area.
Police said they did not expect any
traffic problems when people left the
site today.
