First grand-prix win for Masur
HONG KONG, Sunday (AAP-AFP). -
Unseeded Wally Masur, of Canberra, won his
first grand-pri.x tennis tournament today when
he beat fifth-seeded Sammy Giammalva, of the
US, 6-1, 6-1 in the final of the $114,000 Seiko
Super tournament.
Masur, 20, who had not made a grand-prix
semi-final before, took 65 minutes to win the
top prize of about SA23,000.
Masur, who earlier brushed off Pat Dupre.
the defending champion and second seed, beat
third-seeded Mark Edmondson, of Australia,
6-3, 6-3, in his semi-final.
Masur is the first Australian to win the Hong
Kong title since Ken Roscwalfs 1977 success.
Giammalva, who beat Paraguay's Francisco
Gonzalez, Australia's Brad Drewett and former
Wimbledon semi-finalist Rod Frawlcy, of Aus
tralia, in previous rounds, had to battle to beat
Brad Gilbert, of the US, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), in his
semi.
Edmondson, a Hong Kong singles semi
finalist in 1981, and Kim Warwick lost the
doubles final, 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (2-7), 3-6, to Drew
Giltin, of the US, and Craig Miller, of Aus
tralia.
