INCOME TAX PROSECUTION.
THE DEFENDANT FINED LIM.
I At Ross Police Court yesterday, he
fore Mr. E. L. Hall, Police Magistrate,
I Walter Pa rey was charged with nar-
line: rendered to the Jebel el Taxation
Department, faire and urns of his income
for each of the years ended June 00,
1 1916, 1918. and 1919. He pleaded not
guilty, and was defended by Mr. Civ do
I Gibson. -Mr. J. W. H. Walch conducted
the proceedings on behalf of the du
¡ partment.

found the. the gross income for the
year ended June '19, 1916, had been an
I devastation by X 7,09, and the net income
by £770. "
For the defence, it was stated that
the returns for the two lirst-mctriioticd
years had been made out by defendant's
sister, and the defendant had signed
them without verifying their accuracy,
and it was therefore urged that such
returns had been made in ignorance.
The Police Magistrate, in giving his
decision, stated that he could not accept
such a plea, for the, reason that if he
did any. taxpayer Who cared to have his
returns made by another person, and
signed such returns blindly, could plead
ignorance.
On this charge- defendant was fined
£60 in default distress and imprisonment.
He then pleaded guilty to the
other two charges.
The understatement in the aggregate
of gross and net incomes - for those
years was £20,478 and £1,9.0 respectively.
A fine of £33 was inflicted on account
of the return for the year ended June
30, 1918, and the maximum penalty-,
£100, for the year ended June 30, 1919,
in default distress and imprisonment.
The fines in all totalled £193, in addition
to which the department was allowed
