There is a probability of further additions
to the ranks of horse-owners in and
around Hobart. One or two feelers have
been put out about obtaining suitable
training quarters, and it is understood
efforts will be made to obtain for one
sportsman the stables at J. JiVnns's resi-
dence at Moonah. The scarcity of boys
is a bit of an obstacle, and a suggestion
has been made that the riding fees
should be increased with a view to inducing
a few suitable lads to take up
their residence here. Negotiations for
horses from Melbourne are in progress,
and before the end of the year several
new ones may be in training here.
Tile three-year-old chestnut filly My
Belief, by Desire" from Belief, and the
unnamed two-year-old chestnut filly by
Desire is on Sir cot Mary, arrived at Ho
ball yesterday and for the present are
to be located at their owner's place at
New Town. It is intended to purchase a
couple more young horses, and in all
likelihood a trainer at picton t living beyond
Hobart will take charge of the
ailing.
. In today's issue the Tasmanian Times
'"g Club and the Tasmanian Turf Club
publish the full particulars of the two
year. old races to be held at the next
Cup meetings at Hobart and Launceston
respectively. Owners will particularly
I observe that for Hlwielr the races are for
two-year-olds that have been located in
(Tasmania for a period of not less than
two months at any time previous to December
31, 1926. The conditions for
Mowbray provide for two-year-olds that
have been located in Tasmania for a
period of not less; than one calendar
months immediately- prior to February
4. 1921. Just at the moment, however,
the most important thing to note is that
nominations for the races COME on Friday
evening next at. the T.), C. office. Hobart,
and the T.'J'.C. office, Launceston, and
that the few of sell for each event.
In New South Wales today there will
be an important meeting at Hawkesbury,
when the Guinea-, will be run for. In
Melbourne a. race meeting is to be held
at Moonee Valley.
The Tasmanian Araucaria Jockey Club's
meeting will need the attention of horse
owners and trainers early in the coming
week.
Comiuculing upon the present position
at Hobart between the trotting,«ectiou
and the galloping section with regard to
the demand by the Trotting; Association
for increased stakes, a Northern turf
scribe remarks c-The trotting owners
of Hobart would be wise to take a hand
in the matter, and see that their own
interests are conserved. The trouble
seems to be the creation of a few, and
if they are given too much rope it will
IKS found that their meddlesomeness will
reflect detrimentally -on the sport in
other ways.'' The opinion seems to be
gaining strength that a ballot of bona-fide
trotting horseowners in the South
would give an expression of opinion contrary
to what some people expect.
It is the opinion of a Sydney turf
authority that if the Rosehill Guineas on
Saturday last had been run over a journey
a little in excess of nine furlongs,
the result might be taken as giving a
line of some importance to the A.J.C.
Derby. The 13 starters are all engaged
in the Derby, and Strathredolo. James;
mus. Glenacre, Speciality, and Vespucci
carried the most money. The start was
rather straggling, and the Kilkenny Hoy,
Glenacre, and Speciality had the worst
of it excuses could be found for them
if it was necessary to search. But Glen-
acre lost no time in working his way to
the front, and swinging into the straight
he was attended by Speciality,. while
Wirraway und Erasmus were handiest of
the official, But halfway Away the.
straight the scene changed, and the loud
ina pair were tackled by Syce Knight,,
Wirraway, Struthredolc, and Erasmus,
and for H moment the issue was in
doubt. Wirraway, however, forged out
less than half a furlong, from home, and
shaking off Syce Knight, who had been
disputing his claim, won cleverly, leaving
Strathredolo to beat Erasmus into
fourth place. Wirraway finished as if a
little extra distance would not have been
beyond Min, and he did Syce Knight and
Strathredolo, but Glenacre mail Vespucci
seemed to have had more than enough,
and Story and Alapaha shapes pearly,
while Kilkenny Boy wiped out but little
of his lost ground., The
Wildflower mare Blue Tit, who
has been brought so prominently into
five limelight as a staid man ron by reason
of the two foals she threw in the seasons
of 1915 and 1299 respectively realises
the great sum of 2C,0O0gns.. was only
moderately raced at three years old. and
at the conclusion of her turf career,
which ended at the age named, She was
sold at auction for SOOgns. Blue Tit con
certainly be appropriately ranged up
among prizes of the sale ring. a In
the New South Wales Legislative
Assembly this week the Treasurer stated
that his proposals for additional taxa-
tion in connection with admission to
racecourses and on betting tickets would
be as follows: Admission to saddling
paddock, gentlemen 3s. 2d., ladies Is. 6d.;
admission to Jaeger reserve, 10d.; admission
through outer gates, Judge increase
of bookmakers'' license- fees by 33
per cent. ; Increase of 3d. on each betting
ticket, making the tax in the paddock
3d., and in the Leger and on the flat
2d. The question of imposing a tax on
members' admission tickets is under consideration.
It is also intended to wo
pose the appropriation of broken totalisator
money. possibly to the extent of Is.
The taxation to be applied to country
racecourses has not yet been definitely
determined. " The
prominent Queensland jockey, W.
O'Neill. was injured a day or two ago.
he was riding one horse and leading another,
when his mount stumbled and
threw O'Neill, who was trampled upon
and dragged for some distance, with the
result that he had several ribs fractured.
AV. O'Neill is a brother of V. S.
O'Neill, who, it will be recalled, rode
Ladino to victory in the Hobart Cup.
Bonne, a promising galloper in Queensland,
is a half-brother to Half a Chance,
by Syce (imp.), and he is the victim of
a break of nonieni'lntui'e. Bohac represents
the first letter in each of the words,
brother of Half a Chance, so that in
some architects Bohac is-an appropriate
name. It is just as well, however, that
owners as a general rule do not follow
this system of obtaining names for their
horses, as the result would hardly (says
a "Brisbane writer)' he pleasing, us for
instance, in the cases of brothers of
King o' Mill and King's Flight. There
are willy even worse examples. The
report in a Sydney daily of Monday
stated that the defeat of Chryfolnus
in the Rosehill Spring Stakes on Saturday
last was one of the unexpected happenings.
He was engaging Greenstead on
711). worse than Epsom Handicap figures,
unit yet. went out at 6 for on, so sanguine
were his admirers. However, Greenstead
was well backed, and there was money
for AVolaroi. On lining up at the post
ChrysolaiiB began to play up, but the
starter lost no time in getting the lot
away. Greenstead soon look up the role
of pacemaker, and he remained alone in
front until the end. AVheji fairly in
the straight Wolaroi and Cbrysolaus,
who had been attending Greenstead,
issued their challenge, and a furlong or
so from home the favourite got to within
a length or so of Greenstead, while
Wolaroi was but half a length away.
The latter, however, broke down, and
Greenstead, drawing right away from
Chrysolite, beat him home, by a substantial
margin; while Prince Viridis,
who had been in the rear in the early
part of the race, came very fast, and
wound up in third place.
At a meeting of the Brighton Jockey
Club held this week it was reported that
the application made by the club to the
T.R.C. to hold a race meeting on Easter
Monday had been granted. The ground
committee, was instructed to make provision
for increased accommodation at the
| afTernoon ten-house. A letter from the
Tasmanian Trotting Association, conveying
a resolution as to Stakes for trotting
races providing JilOft net for the winning
horse, was held over until a future meeting.
