Mystery Tribe
Found In N.T.
DARWIN, Wednesday,—A mysterious
native tribe, unlike any other ever seen
in Australia before, has been found deep
in unexplored jungle in Arnhem Land.
The tribe has been located
by an army survey team on
an aerial reconnaissance mis-
sion of the area.
Reports said the team had
discovered three camps, the
most isolated of which was
tucked under the eastern side
of the 1,500 ft. high Parsons
Range, which forms the es-
carpment on the edge of
"stone country," 50 miles
west of Blue Mud Bay, in the
Gulf of Carpentaria.
The camp included five or
six bark-backed huts in a
clearing 50 yards long and 20
yds., wide. It was in the
midst of jungle-like country
with a permanent water hole
about a mile away.
The report was made by
Warrant Officer E. J. Laker,
of Strathfield, who said that
the huts were arranged in
straight lines and looked like
Malayan kampongs.
He said the village, which
looked to house about 30
natives, was inaccessable and
the natives were not likely to
have contacted white men.
It would be impossible to
land any aircraft within walk-
ing distance of the camps, he
said.
