Commonwealth
Support For
Canberra Day
The Commonwealth would
give "appropriate support" to
any organised observation of
Canberra Day and Australia
Day, the Minister for the
Interior, Mr. Freeth, said in
a letter to members of the
A.C.T. Advisory Council last
night.
Mr. Freeth was comment-
ing on an earlier request
from the council seeking the
formation of a standing com-
mittee to organise celebration
of the days.
He felt it was the people of
Canberra who should form
the committee.
Council members agreed to
his suggestion that a sub-
committee be set up within
the council with power to in-
vite other volunteers to form
the main committee.
The council chairman, Mr.
F. D. Quinane, the secretary,
Mr. R. J. Donnellan, and
Mr. W. J. M. Campbell were
elected to the committee.
