MOVIE fans and devotees of the Osmonds
will miss out next weekend as CTC-TV has
announced that it will be extending its live
cricket coverage for the First Test between
England and Australia at Perth.
Normal Saturday and Sunday afternoon
viewing will be replaced with the first and part
of the second session of play.
1 CTC-7 has announced that it is extending live
coverage by Wi hours. It will now show the first
session of play from 2pm to 4pm, break for lunch
and then carry on with live coverage until the
National News at 6pm.
The final session will be shown in the evening,
as was the case with the Brisbane Test.
The station's programs manager, Mr Peter
Hunniford, said yesterday that the extended
coverage was "experimental".
"We are constantly monitoring viewers' reac
tions to cricket coverage and a ledger is being
kept of telephone calls to the. station".
He said that the station would endeavour to
provide children's entertainment programs
before the start of play. The cricket coverage will
replace scheduled movies on both afternoons.
Despite his position with the commercial
station, Mr Hunniford is something of a tradi
tionalist when it comes to cricket. He said
recently that he considered the ABC coverage
in past seasons had been excellent.
"I think that the ABC did a fine job televising
what is a specialist subject", he said.
"Our problem is that we would love to show
full coverage but we have obligations to all our
viewers and cannot afford the time.
"Cricket fans should realise that this season's
coverage was forced upon us by the agreement
between the Australian Cricket Board and PBL
Marketing.
"In future seasons, I would like to see the
ABC given more of a chance to handle a job that
thev do verv well".
