Australia draws
with Italy
MELBOURNE: A goal in the last 11 seconds
by captain Charlie Turner of NSW gave Aus
tralia a 5-all draw with the world water polo
champion, Italy, at the Olympic Pool last night.
The goal was Turner's fourth of the match.
Italy's coach, Gianni Lonzi, said later that Turner
was one of the best players in the world.
Turner and Italian captain Gianni De Magistris
were last night's outstanding players.
De Magistris, veteran of 240 international games
and Italy's highest goal scorer for more than a decade,
scored three goals.
Other prominent players included goalkeepers Rod
Wood, of Australia, and Umberto Panerai, of Italy.
The game was the third in the series so far*
Italy beat Australia 4-2 in the first of two games
in Perth. The other resulted in a 5-all draw.
The teams will play in Hobart tonight and be
followed by matches in Brisbane and Sydney.
