NSW in strong
position in
Adelaide
ADELAIDE: South Australia appears likely
to follow on in the third day's play of the
Sheffield Shield match against NSW at the
Adelaide Oval today.
Needing 233 runs to avoid it, after NSW first
innings of 382, South Australia at stumps yesterday
was six for 150.
Darling, who gave a hot chance to gully off Greg
Watson when two, had batted well since, driving with
power and pulling with assurance in hitting eight fours
in his 208 minutes at the wicket.
NSW, which had started the day at three for 265
went through a torrid first hour, losing the wickets
of David Johnston, 13, Allan Border, 65, Graham
Beard, 0 and Steve Rixon, 5, for 46 runs, leaving it
seven for 310 before a punishing 59 from rugby-league
star Graeme Hughes.
Left-hander Border, put together a solid 65 in 165
minutes, including seven fours, during which he
experienced anxious moments against fast bowler
Rodney Hogg.
Hogg put up a remarkable performance following
his display on the opening day, when his place in
Australia's first Test team to meet England this week
must have been in jeopardy.
An asthma sufferer, on Saturday he bowled 12
overs starting with two spells of three overs, and
because of some difficulty in breathing and an attack
of stomach cramps in the heat his next six bowling
spells consisted of only one over each.
Yesterday was different. He bowled throughout the
pre-lunch session in an unchanged spell of 10-1-40-3
to finish with five for 73.
