Police deny
murdering
prisoner

Three South African policemen
i pleaded not guilty yesterday to I
| murdering a black prisoner I
I they are alleged to have hit with I
a stone, whip and stick, hung
from a tree by his neck and
suspended from a roof beam
with handcuffs. I
The prisoner, Mr Paulos Cane,
who had admitted stealing the
equivalent of SA9.890 in cash from
a van at Hluhluwe in Natal earlier |
this year, died in hospital on July
13 from kidney failure. I
The policemen — two whites
and one black—are charged in the
Natal Supreme Court with I
murdering Mr Cane and assaulting I
his alleged accomplice in the robbery,
Mr Thomas Mazolo. I
According to the indictment, Mr
Mazolo showed the policemen —
constable Darell Godwin, Constable
David Atherstonc and Constable
Mphumuzei Mthethwa —
where he had hidden his share of I
the stolen money after the two
were arrested, but Mr Cane had
not shown his hiding place. Mr I
Cane had been struck on the head
with a stone, the indictment alleged.

The two were then allegedly
taken back to a police station I
where they were suspended from a
roof beam by wires tied to hand- I
cuffs round their wrists, and hit I
with a stick. I
According to a post mortem, Mr
Cane died of "changes consistent I
with acute renal failure".
ESTCOURT, South Africa, (
Tuesday (AAP-Reuter). — Two
white policemen have been jailed I
for forcing black children to have
sexual intercourse in front of them
at a police station. I
Constable Nico Swanepoel and I
Constable Johan Terblanche both
aged 22, were sentenced to 24 and J
32 months in jail respectively. I
The judge acquited two other
constables. All four had pleaded
not guilty.
