ORKNEYS
RSPCA appeal rejected
LONDON, Thursday
(AAP). — The Orkneys seal
cull will take place, but only if
there is no danger of protesters
being hurt.
This became clear last night
after the Secretary of State for
Scotland, Mr Millan, rejected a
last-minute appeal by the RSPCA
to call off the plan to slaughter
5,000 grey seals. But Mr Millan
said the cull would lake place only
if it was safe. He would not risk
a confrontation which would put
people's lives in danger.
He said after a meeting with
RSPCA representatives that the
evidence they had shown him had
already been seen by the Govern
ment.
The chairman of the RSPCA
council, Mr Richard Ryder, said
he was disappointed that the cull
had not been called off.
But he said, "It is my impression
that, as long as the confrontation
continues in the Orkneys, the cull
will not proceed".
