Cross country
WITH ONIY three weeks to go in
the inter-school cross-country pre
miership competition at Lotus
Bay, some exciting events arc pre
dicted for the remaining meetings.
While the individual events have
befin clear cut in most age groups,
the teams sections are very closc,
with at least four divisions depen
dent upon each school fielding full
teams for the remaining competi
tions.
The under-19 girls' age groups,
although attracting only small
numbers each week, sees Girls
Grammar leading from Phillip
College by only one point.
Grammar holds this lead be
cause it fields a full team each
week, while Phillip College relics
heavily on Tracy Harding to score
its points.
To win the premiership, Phillip
College will have to field a full
team for the next three weeks and
win each week's competition.
A similar situation exists in the
boys under-17 age group, where
Grammar is holding a one-point
lead over Daramalan.
Again, it is the superior num
bers fielded by Grammar and its
team spirit that is keeping it
ahead. If Michael Thompson can
muster up the numbers for his
team it is possible that Daramalan
can wii the next three weeks'
events and so win the premiership
by a slim margin.
In the girls' under-17 division it
is possible that a tie could result.
Grammar has 27 points, with De
akin High on 25.
This situation is unusual be
cause Deakin has as its front
runners the two fastest schoolgirls
in Canberra at present — Narclle
Budd and Jenny Burton. Its prob
lem is the lack of a strong third
runner. If it can find such a runner
it could do well enough in the next
three weeks to force a tie.
A total of 133 teams arc taking
part in these weekly competitions,
with well over 300 runners regis
tered to compete.
The positions of leading teams
at the end of the seventh round
were:
BOYS: Under 19, Phillip Col
lege l2'/2, Daramalan 8V4, Gram
mar 7; under 17, Grammar 31,
Daramalan 30, Grammar No 2
I8V2; under IS, Grammar 48,
Grammar No 2 36'/2, Canberra
High 31 Vi\ under 13, Grammar No
1 49, Grammar No 2 43, Gram
mar No 3 35VS; under II, Hackett
82, Grammar 69'A, Hughes 69;
under 9, Grammar 64, Hughes 58,
Grammar No 2, 52.
GIRLS: Under 19, Grammar
11, Phillip College 10, Grammar
No 2 3; under 17, Grammar 27,
Deakin 25, Grammar No 2 16;
under 15, Grammar 28 Vz, Deakin

Deakin 48, Grammar 36'/2,
Watson 29; under 11, Cook 38 V2,
Grammar 33, North Curtin 321^;
under 9, North Curtin 51, Sacred
Heart 45, Hackett 40.
The eighth round of this com
petition will continue at Lotus Bay
at 10 o'clock next Saturday morn
ing. Events from 800 metres to
5,000 metres will be held.
Rugby union
THE OPENING rounds of the
Year 8, Year 9, and Year 10 rugby
competition are completed and the
quarter finals are under way.
Lyncham High, Deakin, St
Edmund's and Watson High have
carried on their past traditions and
have advanced all their teams into
the quarter-finals.
Worth noting, however, is the
strong performance made by
Queanbeyan High and the pres
ence of all its teams in the quarter
finals.
Melrose High, particularly
Year 10, and Holder High, in Year
8, have played strongly and will
need to be watched closely next
year.
There has been a decline in
strength of the Marist and
Daramalan teams. Marist College
has only been able to advance its
year-9 team into the quarter finals
and although Daramalan has
moved through in all age groups its
performance in all teams has been
only mediocre through the season.
The quarter-finals arc to be
completed by July 1.
Team chosen
THE COMBINED Secondary Col
leges have selected a team that
they believe will more than test the
Associated Southern Colleges on
Wednesday, July 13, in rugby un
ion.

ing handed out last year, the selec
tors have chosen a large yet mobile
pack of forwards and a talented,
experienced backline that contains
four members of the NSW
under-18 team.
