Hawthorn back
in top form
MELBOURNE, Sunday.
— Hawthorn staged a
great reversal of form to
trounce struggling Carlton
by 40 points at Princes
Park, the ground they
share as headquarters, in
the VFL round yesterday.
Hawthorn took command
late in the first quarter to win
13.22 (100) to 8.12 (60).
Alan Martello returned to
top form, dominating the hit
outs while Ueigh Matthews,
back after an injury, and ski
pper Peter Crimrains starred
in the roving division.
Matthews kicked five goals
and full-forward Michael
Moncrieff kicked four for
Hawthorn, while Robert
Walls posted four for Carl
ton.
Slowed lo
a walk
The ground was heavy but'
Hawthorn handed the condi
tions well, playing in the
front and blotting the leading
Carlton players out of the
match.
Hawthorn, which led 7.13
(55) to 5.8 (38) at half time,
had a 28-poinf lead at the
end of the third quarter,
ll.K (82) to 8.12 (54).
Carlton slowed to a walk
in'the heavy going and post
ed only one goal in the final
quarter.
Tlje win kept Hawthorn in
fifth place on the League lad
der, while Carlton slipped
back to second-bottom.
Officials of the clubs paid
S250 on Friday for a helicop
ter to hover over the ground
for 2J hours, blowing a hot
draught of air on to the satu
rated oval. The operation
succeeded, officials said.
Footscray staged a second
half revival to beat Fitzroy
by 27 points before a crowd
of 24,000 at VFL Park.
Behind 16 points. 2.10 to
5.8, at half-time, Footscray
ran fcut comfortable winners,
2.15 (87) to 8.12 (60).
The win moved Footscrav
to third place on the ladder.
It trails tho leaders. North
Melbourne and Collingwood,
by four points and is ahead
of last year's premier, Rich
mond, on percentages.
South Melbourne was not
headed in beating Melbourne
13.16 (94) to 11.10 (76) at
Lakeside Oval.

"North Melbourne retained
top place on the ladder with
a 31-point win over_Geclong
at Kardinia Park. It had
some anxious moments dur
ing the- game, but Geelong
was unable to sustain the
many challenges it threw out
at various stages. Final score
was 13.12 (90)-9.5 (59).
Richmond, always looking
the better team, bad to
struggle to defeat Essendon
in their match, winning 16.19
(115) to 15.15 (105).
Commentators described a
brawl at the Essendon Oval
yesterday as the worst VFL
clash they had seen for many
years.
Eight police and as many
officials rushed to separate
players as they struggled on
the ground players left the
field at half-time. About 20
players and spectators were
involved.
Collingwood scraped home
against St Kilda, 11.22 (88)
12.10 (82).
