PAINTING
Food for
Grenada
as
'ransom'
LONDON, Tuesday
(AAP-Reuter). - A man
with a West Indian ac
cent telephoned a British
newspaper last night and
demanded that
$A750,000 worth of
food be given lo "the
people of Grenada" in
exchange for a Dutch
masterpiece stolen from
a London art gallery at
the .weekend.
Police said the caller,
who said he had the valu
able painting by seven
teenth century artist Jan
NVermeer, demanded that
the food be given, within
14 days or else the picture
would be destroyed and
there would be further
raids.
A Scotland Yard
spokesman said detectives
were treating the ransom
demand seriously. The
caller told the Guardian
newspaper the . painting
was hidden in North Lon

The Vermeer,'The Gui-1
tar player' is an out
standing example of Ver-1
meer's work! It was stolen
from Kenwood House, a
former stately home now
owned by the Greater
London Council and run as
a cultural and recreation
centre.
