LAST ROUND OF
BASEBALL
By IAN CROSS
Qucanbcyan and Ains
lie established themselves
as joint favorites for the
premiership following
their strong perform
ances in the final round
of the ACT Baseball As
sociation's first grade
competition played yes
terday.
Both teams had con
vincing victories over their
opponents. Ainslic after
scoring 10 runs in the first
innings, ran out 12-2 win
ners against Daramalan in
the match of the day at
Ainslie Ova!, while at the
Mint Oval Queanbeyan
had an easy 13-3 win over
fourth-placed Woden.
A highlight of the
Ainslic-Daramalan match
was the fine pitching from
of Tricolour Brian Al
brecht. who finished with
the figures of 10 strike
outs, two walks and four
hits.
Albrccht must be given
a great chance of winning
the .1. B. Youngs Out
standing Player of the
Year Award, following the
one point he earned from
yesterday's performance.
The award will be
presented on the eve of
the grand final, Saturday
night, March J6, following
the counting of umpires'
votes.
The honours in yester
day's match. however,
went to another Tricolour,
Greg Kcnl, who returned
a fine all-round perform
ance. In the batting de
partment he was a major
factor in the Tricolours'
whirlwind start, hitting a
home run and three other
safe hits.
He was also consistent
in his customary first base
position.
For Daramalan, Johnny
Walters, who relieved
Zoran Pirjevec as pitcher
at the end of the second
innings, was prominent,
while Pirjcvcc, Peter West
and coach Bill Matthews
also tried hard.
At the Mint Oval,
Queanbeyan was never in
trouble in its match
against Woden, which
used three pitchers, Ross
Tharle, Ian Hansen and
Max Jensen, in an effort
to counter the Boome
rangs' big hitting.
