Mine shaft opens
in backyard
MELBOURNE,
Tuesday. - Two Bal
larat families found
themselves with a prob
lem at the weekend: a
100-year-oid mine shaft
had opened up in their
backyards.
Mr Reg F.dmcnds. of
Pleasant Street, said today
that on Thursday night he
had been admiring the
pumkins growing on the
compost heap at the bot
tom of the garden.
On Friday morning he
was .surprised to see a
huge hole where the
pumpkins and the compost
had been.
The mouth of the shaft
collapsed further during
the weekend and by yes
terday had spread to about
9yd across and into the
yard next door.
Mr Edmcnds is using
the shaft every chance he
gets to dispose of any
unwanted items around
the house bill it is a real
worry lor the neighbours,
Mr and Mrs Keith Tong.
Mrs Tout: is terrified

daughter might fall in.
Kccords show the shaft
was 246ft. Ballarat Coun
cil will report the collapse
to Mines Department
headquarters in Mel
bourne.
