World-wide
music
competition
for Perth
PERTH, Tuesday. -
The first world-wide
music competition ever
held in Australia has
been announced by the
University of Western
Australia and the Inter
national Society for
Music Education.
It is aimed specifically
at up-and-coming young
composers of all nation
alities and coincides with
an international music
conference to be held in
Perth in August.
The contest is for the
best piece of music com
posed for a string quartet,
comprising two violins,
viola and cello, and carries
a first prize of $500. An
additional $250 is to be
awarded jf the judges
think any other entries
merit recognition.
Distinguished
audience
The winning com
position will be played in
August before an au
dience ' of many of the
world's most distinguished
experts on music.
Only composers who
will be under 23 on May
31 are eligible to enter
the free competition. The
one entry each competitor
may submit must be com
pletely his own work,
never previously published,
recorded, broadcast or pub
licly performed, and
should be from 12 to 20
minutes long.
The competition has
been sponsored by ? the
university to mark the
11th global conference of
the International Society
for Music Education in
Perth from August 5 to
12.
About 4,000 delegates,
music experts and leading
young performers from 40
countries will visit Perth
for the conference.

be announced on July 1.
