Title to Miss Goolagong
in Italian tennis
ROME, Monday
(AAP - Reuter). —
Evonne Goolagong of
Australia won the Italian
tennis championships
women's singles final
yesterday when her
match against the young
American Chris Evert
turned into something of
an anti-climax.
A close struggle was ex-
pected between 21-year
old Miss Goolagong, the
former Wimbledon cham-
pion, and Miss Evert, 18,
from Fort Lauderdale,
Florida.
But after a tense first
set, Miss Goolagong swept
to victory 7-6, 6-0 in under
an hour. The second set
lasted only 13 minutes.
By far the most exciting
match of the day was the
men's- semi-final between
Manuel Orantes of Spain
and Holland's Tom Okker.
It went to five sets with
Orantes emerging the win-
ner 3-6. 7-6, 6-3. 4-6, 7-6.
The men's semi-final
match between lIie Nas-
tase of Romania and
Paolo Bertolucci of Italy
opens the men's finals
today.
The match was sus-
pended yesterday because
of bad light and after vio-
lent interruptions from the
crowd.
At one point a bottle
was thrown at Nastase by
one of the spectators.
The men's doubles final
is an all-Australian affair,
with the exception of Tom
Okker who partners John
Newcombe of Australia.
They meet Ross Case
and Geoff Masters, the un-
seeded pair who yesterday
beat Americans Dick
Stockton and Brian Gott-
fried 6-4. 6-4, and like
their opponents have not
dropped a set in reaching
the final.
