NSW local
govt
elections
today
New South Wales shire and municipal coun
cil elections will be held today, involving rate
payers in shires and towns around Canberra and
many ACT residents who own land at South
Coast resorts.
In Eurobodalla Shire.
3,180 postal votes were
issued, but the number
returned would not be
known until counting to
night at the council
chambers in Moruya, the
Shire Cierk, Mr L.
Smith, said yesterday.
Four candidates were
contesting A riding; the
three sitting councillors A.
E. Fcnning. G. R. Prior,
and J. C. Parker, and Mr
1. Perriman. Voting would
be at Batcmans Bay, Dur
ras South. Nelligcn, Bate
haven, Mogo, and Moruya.
Six candidates were con
testing B riding, which in
cludes the township of
Moruya: Councillors E.
R. Hunt, J. P. Mount and
K. L. Mackay, and nomi
nees Mr N. Ferguson, R.
J. Quinn and N. Neilsen.
Polling booths would be
established at Moruya,
Tuross Head, Turlinjah,
Broulee and Mogo.
In C riding, the southern
part of the shire, a vac
ancy had been created by
the decision of Councillor
K. Burke to stand down.
Councillors W. B. Smyth
and R. J. Murphy would
contest their seats against
Mr A Birmingham. Mr
R. Gibbs. Mr K. Wilding
and Mr D. Ramsay
Queanbeyan
Fourteen people, includ
ing Alderman Mrs Hope
Marland, will contest the
nine seats offerinc in the
Queanbeyan Municipal
Council.
The shire clerk. Mr R.
Smith, said yesterday that
polling booths would be
at the Queanbeyan Public
School, and at the public
schools in Queanbeyan
West, Queanbeyan South
and Queanbeyan East.
Yarrowlumla
The Yarrowlumla Shire
Clerk, Mr E. Buchtmann,
said yesterday that there
would be no contest in the
Shire's B riding.
Two councillors had to
be elected for each riding.
Four were contesting A
riding, three in C riding
and four sought election in
D riding.
Polling would be at the
shire chambers in Quean
beyan, or: in A riding, at
Wattle Creek Methodist
Hall in Hall, Sutton Public
School, Bungendore
School of Arts; in C Rid
ing, the Bungendore
School of Arts or the
Plaza Theatre, Captains
Flat; in D riding, the
Plaza Theatre, Captains
Fiat.
Mr Buchtmann said one
woman, Mrs C. Brandli,
would contest the election,
in D riding.
Yass
A near-record field of
16 candidates will contest
today's Yass Municipal
Council election.
Only once before, in
1968, has there been a
bigger field. Six silling
aldermen and 10 new
candidates are seeking the
nine seats.
Alderman Mrs Gwen
Warmington is the only
woman in the field. Rivals
for the mayoral role in the
new council, Aldermen E.
3. O'Connor and S. Dob
bin, are cxpccted to be
near the head of the poll
while Alderman T. M.
Clayton is certain to be
one of the first elected.
Goodradigbee
In Goodradigbee Shire
there is an election ot.!v
in B riding with six can
didates seeking the four
scats.
Shoalhaven
Shoalhaven Shire, which
was run by an administra
tor from 1955 to 1959,
will have an election in
ridings for the first time
since a council took the
reins again in 1959.
The shire clerk, Mr R.
T. Knowles, said yesterday
that this election would
also be the first in mem
ory which would be con
tested by women. Three
women were among 25
candidates who would con
test the nine positions.
Mr Knowles said three
councillors were required
from each riding: seven
had nominated in A rid
ing. 12 in fi riding, and six
in C riding.
Braidwood
In Tallaganda Shire,
which centres on Braid
wood, councillors in A and
B ridings would be re
elected unopposed, a
spokesman said yesterday.
Four nominations had
been received for C riding
and six for D riding.
Polling would be at
Btaidwood, Mongarlowe,
Araluen and Reidsdale.
Cooma
Fourteen candidates, in
cluding seven sitting ald
ermen, will contest the
nine seats on the Cooma
Municipal Council today.
This follows the an
nouncement by a former
Mayor of Cooma, Mr
Lindsay Hain, and also
former alderman Mr Alan
Frost, that they would not
seek re-election.
The sitting aldermen are
the Mayor, Mr Field, the
Deputy Mayor, Mr Wal
ker, and aldermen Bookall
ill, Montague, Englebrecht,
Hillas, and Judd.
For the second time in
Cooma's municipal history,
there is a woman candi
date, Mrs Dolly Ollsin.
Goulburn
There will be 16 candi
dates for the 12 seats on
the Goulburn City Council.
Two previous aldermen
have not renominated and
there are six new names
on the ballot paper.
