Car child-restraints
law on Friday
The fitting and wearing of child
restraints in motor vehicles will become
law in the ACT on Friday.
The Minister for the Capital Territory,
Mr Ellicott, said yesterday that
amendments to the Motor Traffic Ordinance
would require children aged one
to 13 years to be restrained in an
approved restraint or adult scat belt if
one was available.
If seat belts were not available in the
front seat children must ride in the
back.
Drivers would be responsible for
ensuring that children in their cars
obeyed these requirements.
Owners of vehicles manufactured
after January 1, 1965, would be required
under the new law to install
approved seat belts in the front seats if
approved belts were not fitted. (This is
five years earlier than the previous date
of manufacture applied under the law.
A preliminary survey by the Department
of the Capital Territory has shown
about 75 per cent of children picked up
at schools by parents do not use safety
belts.
