Peterborough Distress Relief
BI-WEEKLY MEETING.
Present—His Worship the Mayor (in
the chair), Mesdames Jones,
and Gowans, with Messrs. Bennett
Maddern, Sumner, and the Secretary
(A. Gowans). Apologies from Mrs.
McKenzie (sick) and Capt Smith.
The minutes were read and con
firmed.
The Secretary reported that parcels
had been received from the Girl Guides
(per Miss Watt), Mrs. P. Clapp, Mrs.
J. Philp, Mrs. McAuley, Mr. F Wils-
den, Mrs. Yeomans, and the Matron
(Hospital), and Mr. G. Morgan. In
come : Sacred Concert £3/2/-, Mrs.
G. S. Matthews 10/-, Mr. J. C. Dodman
2/-, Soccer Club £2/2/6. 48 swaggies
had received a travelling ration and 6
of them clothing. 29 distributions to
locals had been made, besides leather
for 8 pairs of boots or shoes.
Mr. Sumner reported on the work of
the Sub-Committee, re Sacred Concerts
and the visit of the Broken Hill Soc
cer Club, and the forthcoming Orches
tral Concert.
Thanks, sincere, was expressed to
Mr. Sumner, Mr. Luck, Mr. Choat
(Choir Master), and his Choirs, also to
Mr. Hunter and his soccer players for
their work in connection with the above
mentioned functions.
The depleted conditions of the depot,
and the entirely inadequate number of
parcels to cope with the growing needs
of the local unemployed, caused serious
consideration. It is recognised that
while the need is greater, the resources
of the town to give to the depot are
greatly reduced, and that more and
more people are wearing out their own
clothes. It was therefore reluctantly
decided to close down the depot at the
Town Hall, until after next meeting.
The Mayor reported that several
pairs of school boots had been re
ceived from the Government, and these
had been distributed during the week.
Accounts totalling £4/17/3 were
passed for payment.
