Rain stops
play in
North Coast
Open
COFFS HARBQUR, I
Friday. - The second
round of the North
Coast golf open was
abandoned today after
torrential rain drenched
the course.
Players on the course
found conditions impossible.
The committee decided
after a number of inspec
tions to cease competition
at 3.30pm. At that stage
more than an inch of rain
had saturated competitors.
The event has now been
reduced from 72 to 54
holes. Many of the fair
ways were clotted with un
planned water hazards. For
some of the favourites who
crashed today, it was indeed
a welcome decision.
World Cup representa
tive Bill Dunk was three
over the card after eight
holes. He bogeyed the first,
second and third holes.
Dunk yesterday had a 77.
Chris Tichner who was
in second place on 71 last
night was four over.
There were also hard
luck stories. The 1967
winner Vic Bennetts after
76 yesterday was 2' under
par after 14 holes. He
birdied the 5th and 8th
holes.
Brian Moran played bril
liantly in impossible condi
tions to be three under to
day after 11 holes and 4
under for the tournament
and a clear leader at that
stage.
However, the weather
quickly cancelled Moran's
advantage.
For West Australian
Stan Peach the cancellation
of play was bad luck.
Peach played early today
in light rain and improved
by a shot on yesterday's
round of 72 to be the
leader after 36 holes.
Mr Col Irvine, the tour
nament chairman, announ
ced that scores today would
not count. The tournament
will now become a 54-hole
event with 18 holes to be
played tomorrow and the
final 18 with 120 leading
competitors plus ties on
Sunday.
At this stage the leader
is still Randall Vines on 70,
two under par, one shot in.
front of Peter Harvey,
Chris Tichner and Brian
Moran all from New South
Wales on 71 and two shots
ahead of Stan Peach and
Hav/aiian professional Jerry
Stolhand on 72.
Leading amateur is still
Michael Ridd on 73, two
shots ahead of former Stato
champion Don Sharp.
Ridd was a happy man
after today's cancellation,
as he had lost the lead to
Sharp by a shot.
