Scholarship grants rise
The Minister for Edu
cation and Science, Mr
Bowen, announced yes
terday several new in
creases in the allowances
payable to students hold
ing Commonwealth
scholarships for tertiary
study.
The following changes af
fecting Commonwealth Uni
versity Scholarships and
Commonwealth Advanced
Education Scholarships be
come effective from Janu
ary 1 next year:
Maximum living allowance
increased from $620 to
$700 a year for scholars
living at home, and from
$1,000 to $1,100 per year
for scholars living away
from home. Independent
scholars, including those
married or over 25, also
will receive up to $1,100
a year.
For scholars whose living
allowance is determined
on the basis of the income
of their family, the maxi
mum living allowance
will be paid where the
family income is $2,800
or less. At present the
maximum allowance is
paid where the family in
come is $2,650 or less.
Scholars receiving a living
allowance may earn up to
$10 a week during the
academic year without
affecting their entitle
ment to the allowance, in
place of the present $6
($7 in the case of inde
pendent students).
Scholars who turn 25 years
of age during their course
may be granted independ
ent status from January 1
in the year in which their
25th birthday occurs.
External students who hold
scholarships will be help
ed with travelling ex
penses incurred in atten
ding residential schools
organised by universities
in connection with their
courses.
Mr Bowen said also that
from January 1 the stipend
payable to holders of Com
monwealth postgraduate
awards would be increased
from $2,350 to $2,60Q a
year.
In 1971 there will be two
schemes of aw.vds for post
graduate study: Common
wealth Postgraduate Re
search Awards, for which
700 new awards will be of
fered, and the new scheme
of Commonwealth post
graduate-course awards un
der which 100 awards will
be made.
The new stipend will be
payable for both schemes;
