Mr. J. Hutchison.
Mr. James Hutchison, the Party's can
didate for Hindmarsh, has been a foremost
battler in the Labor cause ever since he
came to this State from Scotland nearly
twenty years ago. Prior to the advent of
the Labor Party he was well known as a
lecturer at the Adelaide Democratic Club on
economic subjects affecting the welfare of
the masses. In that institution he filled
various, offices, including president. As an
enthusiastic unionist he has worked hard
and held many positions. On the forma
tion of the Labor Party he became an active
member, and while president in 1896 he was
selected to oppose Mr. John Darling in
East Torrens, and was only beaten by the
narrow majority of 97 votes. After the
lamented death of Mr. McPherson, Mr.
Hutchison was elected to represent East
Adelaide, and soon made his influence felt
in the House as an outspoken, fearless, and
forcible debater. He carried without a
division a Bill providing better accommoda
tion for shearers, fought hard to pass
a Minimum Wage Bill, and suffered finan
cially for the part he took in the tramway
grab discussion. He prominently supported
all liberal legislation while in the Assembly,
and did good work as a member of the
Civil Service Royal Commission. He
has a host of friends in the democratic
district of Hindmarsh.
