Contenders
for ACTU
post clash
MELBOURNE, Mon
day. — Two contenders
for the presidency of the
Australian Council of
Trade Unions, Mr Har
old Souter and Mr Bob
Hawke, clashed today
over a statement issued
by Mr Souter at the
weekend.
The statement attacked
an alleged "alliance front
of the so-callcd New Left
Movement which seeks to
control the trade unions".
It criticised members of
the ACTU for pursuing a
"senseless thrust for power
for individual or sectional
gain".
Mr Souter said today that
he had issued the statement
in his capacity as secretary
of the ACTU on behalf of
seven members of the
ACTU executive, including
the retiring president, Mr
Monk.
Mr I-Iawke said he found
Mr Souter's document "dif
ficult to understand, it is so
badly expressed".
"However", he said, "If
the innuendos in it arc a
smear against myself I am
disappointed and find them
repugnant — I will not re
sort to such tactics myself".
