PAKISTAN CLINCHES
HOCKEY SERIES
RAWALPINDI, Wednesday (AAP-Reuter). — Pakistan clinched (he
three-Test hockey series against Australia today with a 2-0 win in the
second Test after having won the first Test 2-1 at Lahore on Sunday.
Pakistan ccntrc-forward,
Tariq Niazi, scored in the
12th minute, and right-back
Tanveet Dar added the
second goal just before the
game's end.
Pakistan's quick-footed
short passing on the for
ward line kept the Austra
lian defence under constant
pressure, and it was fine
work by goalkeeper Denr
ing and right full McWat
lers that kept the score
down.
The Australians missed a
number of chances which
they failed to convert
through faulty shooting.
They even failed with a
penalty stroke in the ninth
minute in the second half
when left-out Smart could
not beat Pakistan's agile
goalie Zokir.
More than 20,000 fans,
including Pakistan's acting
President, Abdul Jabbar
Khan, saw the match under
an ovcrcast sky.
The ground was bumpy
in some places, and the ball
popped up awkwardly occa
sionally. This was the rea
son some excellent move
ments ended in fiasco.
One thing which sur
prised everyone was that
the visitors left Pakistan's
immaculate centre-half
Saeed Anwar completely]
unmarked.
Anwar, one of the best
pivots in the game, wast
the brain behind all the
Pakistani moves.
Had the Australians put
a chcck on him. the Pai
stan team would have had
to change its entire strategy.
