Local bishop
on tribunal
The Bishop of Can
berra and Goulburn,
the Right Reverend K.
J. Clements, is a mem
ber of the Appellate
Tribunal to which the
Reverend Neil Glover
is considering an ap
peal after being found
guilty of "conduct dis
graceful in a clergy
man" by a Melbourne
diocesan court.
Because of this he was
unable to comment yester
day on the verdict.
As a result of the find
ing, Mr Glover has lost his
vicarage and licence to per
form his priestly duties in
Melbourne; he originally
came before the tribunal for
remarrying while his first
wife, whom he divorced,
was still alive.
On Tuesday Mr Glover
was quoted as saying he
would apply to another
diocese for a licence to
continue as a priest.
Mr Glover said, "I hope
to get consideration from
dioceses such as Canberra
and Goulburn, and Sydney,
where some divorcees are
able to remarry in church".
[It is understood that a
decision on whether divor
cees can marry in a church
rests with the diocesan
bishop. About three - quar
icrs of Australian dioccsan
bishops place an outright
prohibition on the re
marrying of divorcees in
churches. But the others al
low such remarriages after
a stringent examination of
individual circumstances.
This applies in the diocese
of Canberra and Goulburn.l
