John Gleeson's
great bowling
effort for NSW
in Shield
SYDNEY, Sunday. — New South Wales, one wicket
down for 42 in the second innings, is 106 runs in the lead
against South Australia, thanks to Tamworth spin bowler
Johnny Gleeson's five wickets in South Australia's first
innings.
The 28-year-old PMG technician dismissed both of South Australia's
veteran and prolific ningetters, Lcs Favell and Neil Dansic, and then
"cleaned-up" the tnilcnders to finish with 5-46 off J0.7 overs.
After NSW wcnl in lo hat
for their sccond innings, two
of its batsmen were lost.
Rlackman was bowled for
eight by paeeman Aian
Frost, who then delivered a
ball that struck Brian Booth
high on the thigh.
Booth later had to retire
on six with a pulled thigh
muscle, but he should he
able to resume, on Monday.
South Australia's young
est player, Greg Chappell.
18. linished with 68 not out
after a resolute stand of
160 minutes.
Cileeson. who flies down
from Tamworth most week
ends to play with Balmain
Club, bowled far more con
sistently than he did against
Queensland, despite the oc
casional full toss.
The unpredictable varia
tions in his spin attack
completely baffled Favell
and Dansie. Cileeson de
livers the ball with a bent
up finger.
Following his 8-77 in the
Queensland match, he has
an aggregate of 13 wickets
for 123 runs on the Sydney
Cricket Ground, which has
a splendid pitch for spin
bowlers.
The spectators had watted
expectantly to see who was
the better, Favell or
Glecson.
Favell was with left
hander Ken Cunningham
with the total on 52 before
he faced up lo the Tam
worth boy.
Bowling from the north
ern end. Glecson began with
a maiden to Cunningham.
The first ball of his scc
ond over deceived Favell
who stretched unsurely for
ward to it, missed, and
wryly grinned at Glceson.
The next hall Favell
sliced past slips for two and
(hen drove an over-pitched
hall for another two.
On the third over from
Cileeson, Favell dipped the
seventh hall upwards to
wards silly point, where
Booth lunged forward a.nd
almost made a catch of it.
The duel came to an end
with Glceson's fifth delivery
in the fourth over.
Favell moved for an olT
hrcalc shot. It turned off
slightly from leg and Favell
scooped it up, sending Glee
son dashing across the
pitch to easily take the
catch.
He had 1-10 and his
figures became 2-11 when
he howled Dansie who had
been most unsettled.
