New school
lighting
poor
Watson High School Parents and Citizens
Association was told last night that lighting
in some of the classrooms was so poor that on
dull days some children were unable to see
the blackboards.
The association presi
dent, Mr C. C'halkcr, told
the first annual meeting that,
lighting in some classroom's
was worse than poor, anci
complaints made to the De
partment of the Interior
had brought unsatisfactory
results.
Mr Chalker said that a
long list of faults had been
submitted to the depart
ment and, after some con
siderable time, some of
them were remedied.
"Some were not done,
including the oval, the heat
ing in the foyer and in the
lunch shelter," he said.
These Items are listed
in a letter from the depart
ment as being scheduled for
completion during "the
Christmas holidays".
Mr Chalker pointed out
that the letter had been
written in December last
year, but had not specified
which Christmas holidays.
Cramped
canteen
He said the deepfreeze
unit in the canteen, pro
vided by the department,
had been replaced by P and
C funds because it had
been inefficient. He said
conditions in the canteen
were "trying" and cramped
and needed enlargement to
cater for the 200 pupils
added to the school rolls
during the year.
The headmaster, Mr
Sweaney, told the meeting
he felt the most vital faults
had been corrected, were
being corrected or would be
corrected in the near future.
Watson High School's
shortcomings were first
brought to public attention
on October 27 last year,
when the Member for the
ACT, Mr J. R. Fraser,
utrongly criticised in Par
Jiament the design and con
-ttructioa of the school.
