We'll win
if I lead:
Whitlam
SYDNEY, Tuesday. — Mr Whitlam, the
Deputy Leader of the Federal Opposition, said
in a television interview tonight Labor would
win a Federal election if he became party
leader.
"Harold Holt has had
his leadership handed to
him on a platter," he added.
Asked whether Labor
would win under Mr
Calwell, Mr Whitlam
promptly replied, "No com-
ment".
Mr Whitlam attacked the
Federal Executive and said
it had dumped those who
were not its complete pris-
oner.
He forecast that Mr
Chamberlain would be
superannuated and that
other members would be
forced to retire "before
their time."
"We have no sooner
got rid of that image of the
Federal Conference being
one of faceless men than
find ourselves faced with 12
witless men," he said.
Mr Whitlam said that a
Caucus vote was a good
reflection of Labor think-
ing.
Asked whether he would
stand for leader, Mr
Whitlam emphasised that
he would stand next time
there was a ballot for
leader. He had made
this clear many months ago.
The Dawson by-election
would undoubtedly have
implications in the result
and no doubt Mr Holt
would exploit the position,
he said.
"However, I am hopeful
electors will not be con-
fused by the wrong decision
made by the Federal Exe-
cutive," he said.
On State aid, Mr
Whitlam said he felt it was
inevitable that the Com-
monwealth would come to
assist all forms of educa-
tion which it did not as-
sist now.
He said this was in ac-
cord with the policy of the
late Mr Chifley, former
Labor Prime Minister.
He said there should he
a national inquiry into
teacher training, technical
education, and other forms
beside those at university
level.
