THE EASTERN CAMPAIGNS
A SERIES OF ENCOUNTERS
IN EAST PRUSSIA, POLAND,
AND GALICIA.
MOUNTAIN FIGHTING IN THE
CARPATHIANS.
LONDON, January 31.
The official Russian statements mention
fighting along most parts of the
eastern front in East Prussia in Mid
die Poland and along the Carpathians
In East Prussia the Russians appear
to be devoting their attention mainly
to the extreme north-eastern comer of
First Prussia to the north of the River
Proper where the obstacle to an ad
t ance presented further south by the
chain of the Masurian Lakes is absent
The Russians are advancing on Tilsit
and are also moving westward just
north of Gumbinnen Seventy mile
west of Gumbinnen is Konigsberg the
capital and most strongly fortified
town of East Prussia |
In Middle Poland the heaviest fighting
has been along the Bzura not far
to the west of Warsaw where the Germans
took the offensive but without
success. The Russian artillery con
times to prove remarkably effective
It is officially stated that the Rns
i sians have beaten back the attempted
advance over the Carpathians into
Galicia made by strong Austro-German
forces and that the fighting has gone
in then favour everywhere except it
one point where their advance- guard
fell back Mention is made of fighting
both to the south west of the Dukla
Pass and south o eastwards from that
pass along the Carpathians as far as
the Volecz Pass at the head of Dip
Stryi River over which runs the rail
way from Lemberg to Munkacs in
Hungary This pass is over 80 miles
south-east of the Dukla Pass Apparently
the Russians are holding the
country on the Hungarian side of the
Police Pass, for fighting is said to be
going on in the direction of Munkacs
which stands on the River Latnrza at
the point where it emerges from the
spurs of the Carpathians into the
plains of Hungary and about 35 miles
from the summit of the pass The
Austrian official statement gives quite
a different version of this fighting in
the Carpathians It claims that after a
weeks fighting in tins snow covered
and rugged country the Austrians non
control all the posses- in this part of
the Carpathians If this were the case
they could, of course choose their time
and place for in advance into Galicia
but according to the Russian state
ments only one pass is really in the
hands of the Austrians while apparent
It the Russians are fighting on the
Hungarian side of the mountains both
near the Dukla Pass and in the region
of Munkais
PETROGRAD January 29
To days communique says? -
' We have repulsed the Germans
to the north of Tibet and have destroyed
the railway station at Pope
gen, on the line from visit to
Memel. We are also making some
advances in the districts round Pill
fallen (30 miles south-east by east of
Tilsit), and Gumbinnen.
"In Middle Poland, on the left
bank of the Vistula, the Russian artillery
has silenced several German
batteries, and inflicted great loss on
their trenches. I
"The fighting in the region of the
Carpathians, from the Dukla Pass
south-eastwards to the head of the
Stryi River, and to Munkacs, in Hungary,
on Tuesday and Wednesday
went in our favour, especially to the
south-west of the Dukla Pass, where
the Austrians retreated, abandoning their
ammunition and stores-"
PETROGRAD, January 30.
The communique issued last night was
1 as follows: -
"In East Prussia fighting continues
in the forests to the northward or
Pillkallen and of Gumbinnen.
"in middle Poland the German attacks
in the Bolimow district (along
the Bzura) have been repulsed
with heavy loss.
"Our progress in the region of the
Dukla Pass and elsewhere along the
Carpathians is being maintained, in
spite of a desperate resistance by the
Austrians, except at the Beskid Pass,
where the Russian advance guard fell
back. In the past three days the
Russians have captured in this region
60 officers and 2,400 men, and
have taken three field guns and ten
machine-guns."
THE AUSTRIAN STATEMENT.
AMSTERDAM, January 31.
The following official statement has
been issued in Vienna,: -
As the result of vigorous battles,
extending over a week, we have-
gained the control of the passes leading
over the Carpathians from Hungary
into Galicia. Our victories were
won in spite of the heavy falls of
snow-, which covered the Carpathians,
and the difficult nature of the ground.
We made prisoners of 10,000 Russians.
