A CLERGYMAN'S SALARY.
REFUSAL OF AN INCREASE.
MELBOURNE, March 6.
An incident unique in times of clamour
for increased wages and salaries has occurred
at the vestry meeting of St.
Philip's Church of England, Abbotsford.
The vicar (Rev. H. B; Hewett) was asked
to retire from the room, and during his
absence it was unanimously agreed that
his salary should be increased from 2500
to 325 per annum. When informed by
the chairman (Sir Arthur Snowden's) of
the decision the vicar said the authorities
were about to undertake a heavy responsibility
in connection with the erection of
a new Sunday-school, and he preferred
that the stipend should remain as at
present. Although pressed to accept the
increase he courteously declined.
