BUS FARES LIKELY
o GO UP
City Council Approves of
Company's' Application
It is alinost certain that' bus fares in Goul
burn will &le inreiased 'i the near future to .offset
the present high costs of supp!ies and labour.
After considering an applica
tion from' the proprietorq of. the
Goulbugn bus service., for. .ip-,
creased fares,, the City Council
last night 'decided to recommend
to the Department of Road'
Transport that approval be
given.
A proposal to curtail certain
local services was. also : sub
mitted tq. council, which. ra
solved to tike no acti8n in
this matter Until the position
could be, thoroughly discussed
with a 'representative' 'of the'
bus company. '
A letter from the Department.
of Road Transport stated that
application had been received
from Reo Motors Pty., Ltd.,;as
proprietors , of the .Goulburn
Bus 'Service for permissioni .tc
increase .the fares..for omnibus
servaces inr the Goulburn dis
trit,'" The company .also de
sired to reduce services, by dis
continuing a number of journeys
that were 'poorly patronised
Council was asked to give its,
views on the two matters raised
by "the company. It was in-'
formed that the department,
would. have no objection, to the
discontinuation of services asv
proposed provided public re
qcuirements were reasonably met
under new arrantgements.
Mr. R. J. McLean, Town
Clerk. stated that a similar ap
plication. hlad. been ,received, by

three years.
It was stated that the fac
tors contributing to' the losses

It was estimated. that since
1939 omnibus' replacements.
maintenance and running costs
had increased as follow: Omni
bus replacement costs. 60 per
cent.; petrol, oil and lubricants.
40 per. cent.; tvres and, rub
ber. 20 per; cent.:, spare parts
and accessories. 50 per cent.:
labour costs, 50 per cednt ?
Th., prpposals in regard to,;
fare alteratioii's"were: To raise,

threepence - to .fourpence; two
sections, sixpence to eightpence;
and children's fares .from a

.Mr. McLean said he had re
ceived a mlessage that morning
from a departmental oiflcer:'who
had stated that the proposed in
creases were considered reason
able. Fares in bractically all
areas had been increased. i
The Mayor, Aid. P. R.. D.
Hollis, said he had conferred
with the Town Clerk, and Mr,
A. H. Currell,"i Building and
Health Inspector, and. he
thought it was a necessity to
increase the, fares. The comrn
pany's financial statements had
been produced to support the
claima ,.
He said efforts would be made
to maintai. the present ser
vices. If the fares were increased,
the company, might agree to re
consider its proposals to restrice
sonicme services.
On the motion of Aid. T. N.
Powell, seconded by Aid. J. B.
Mullen, it was decided to recom
mlend to the department that
the increased fares be approved.
Aid: Goodhew then moved that
the Mayor, Ald. Davies and Mr.
Currell form a. committee to
meet a company representative
to discuss the proposed restric
tions in service;
An 'amendment by Aid. Hil
yard that-the matter . of fare
increases be deferred until the
discussion'vwith the company,
representativ' was not seconded.
