MORE FUNDS
SOUGHT FOR
CALLAN PARK
SYDNEY, Tuesday.
—The Minister for
Health, Mr. Sheahan,
was asked to-day to
approach the Premier,
Mr. Heft'ron, for a
greater financial allo
cation for Callan Park
Mental Hospital.
The Leader of the Opposi
tion, Mr. Askin, asked in the
Legislative Assembly whether
the distressing shortcomings
at the institution were not
due primarily to lack of
money.
Mr. Askin asked whether
the increase of about £580,
000 announced last week, for
all mental institutions was
only a little more than the
increases for each of the last
two financial years. He also
asked whether it would not
enable a worthwhile start on
the far-reaching reforms sug
gested by the Royal Commis
sioner.
Migrants
In reply, Mr. Sheahan said
he had been asking for
money to help relieve the
overcrowding in mental in
stitutions.
The problem had been ac
centuated by the addition of
779 mental patients from
among migrants — sufficient
alone to fill one institution
he said.
The health authorities had
overspent the allocation in
the past two years, he added.
