50 KILLED IN U.S. PLANE CRASH
HOLDSCROFT (Virginia),
Tuesday (A.A.P.). — A Vis-
count airliner crashed and
burned last night in a fog
shrouded Virginian swamp,
killing 46 passengers and the
crew of four.
An airline spokesman said
the death toll might be 51, as
it was possible a baby was
also on board.
All those on preliminary
passenger lists issued by the
airline gave addresses in the
United States.
Only a few hundred yards
away from the area of the
crash was an open field where
the plane might have made a
safe emergency landing had
the pilot been able to see it.
"She seemed to come down
like somebody pulled a rug
out from under her," said
Mr. Robert Tench, whose
farmhouse is only about 300
yards from the crash scene.
"She came straight down."
He said the plane was low
and circling, apparently lost
in the heavy fog, shortly be-
fore the crash.
