"ÍGÍTNERATJ MANAGER'S REPORT. I
i ".. - -seat. Taieri ; 1
The general manager (mr. TRUCKS, in
his report was the following. At the
beginning of the year the alterations
which were in progress at No. 2 dredge
were completed, and the dredge put to
work on the inshore end of the old river
channel. No. 1 dredge was taken off
tin dredging work on March 17, and considerable
alterations were made to her
to enable her to make the Government
boat channel. After this work was done,
and also a channel dredged for our own
convenience, up to the workshop wharf,
she was again altered back to a tin
dredge,- some further small improvements
being incorporated at the same time, and
she recommenced tin-dredging on September
23. No. 3 dredge has been running
all the year on the same cat, all of which
has the sticky clay overburden, but with
karang under it of varying quality. Nos.
4 and 5 dredges have been working the
OLEX for eczema and all skin troubles,
1/6- A. F. Miller and Son, Chemists.
old river bed and ground adjacent to what
I may term the middle harbour with good
results They have taken out most of
the centre of the river bed up to the
point seawards at which they are limited
by the increasing depth of the ground
It may be remarked that the improvements
effected in the old fleet have just
tied the expense entailed and have been
of material benefit to the camp my Had
these not been carried out the working
costs would have been very materially
higher Nos 4 and 5 dredges have run
very regularly in fact without an) long
stoppage with the exception of the accident
to No is ladder The work done
by all the dredges is clear 1) shown in the
sketch map accompanying this report
Government Channel This work took
longer than I had at first thought, as the
place for the channel had silted a good
deal since my preliminary survey was
taken so that, instead of only baring to
be dredged in certain reaches it had to be
dredged the whole way Further as slit
mg was very liable to take place I judged
i desirable to dredge to a greater depth
than was required by our contract with
the Siamese Government in order to ad
test a certain amount of silting without
getting outside the contract limits
therefore the channel is dredged to 6ft
depth instead of the 3ft required the whole
of the liver current has been trained
into it so that there is a very consider-
able seed which helps to keep it clear
3 or about 300 yards of the length a good
deal of difficulty was experienced with a
port of quicksand which also deals) ed the
completion of it
Workshop Channel - 'While No 1
dredge was in the form to do channel digging
1 dredged out a good channel to
our workshop wharf as this place was
sitting up rapidly and seriously hamper
ing our firewood water and workshop
services to and from the dredges There
is also a good current through the, chair
nel and it should last for some time with
out silting
Output -The total output of tin oxide
for the year has been 387 Tons cwt qr
"lb as compared with 1 142 tons liens
Cqr 916 for the previous year. The comparative
output of the various dredges
were -No 1 86 tons 8cwt 2qr 124 as
against 161 tons 9cwt 2qr life (This
dredge was a considerable part of the year
channel making J No 2 128 tons 12cwt

against 180 tons 19cwt 2qr. Ulh (No 4
and 5 ran the full year as against only
part of the persons j ear)
The actual running times of the
dredges were -No 1 t,26 hours including
2 863 on channel work alone No I
2108 hours No 3 5 493 hours No 4
6,297 hours No 5, 6 "39 hours making a .
grand total of 29 962 which compares with
23 352 hours run in the previous
year.
The yardage output has been -No 1
233 6 r cubic yards exclusive of chain
work No 2 558 460 No 3 An
82a No 2 86-88 No J 900 065
making a grand total of 235"
345 cubic yards as against 2,21 313
cubic yards in the previous year The
average yield from this output was 98
per cubic yard as against 3 15s per
cubic yard the previous year The work
ing costs including the completion of
alterations to No 2 dredge at the beginning
of the year were 3 5061 per cubic
yard as against 3 12d last year The the
output has been sold for £L>3 464 2s "d
or at an in rag of illO has Id net to
the company exclusive of export duty
which compare-, with an average price of
1462 19s 9d per ton in the previous year
Condition of Dredges -All the dredges
are repaired and overhauled as becomes
necessary and four of them are in good
running, order and going At the moment
of writing No 3 requires a considerable
amount of now placing on the hull and
this is being done It will be remarked
that the dredging, cost is a shade higher
this year Good in fact Some of this
a must be put down to a pretty general rise
II protest VII metals have risen in price
and the unsettled European industrial
conditions have also caused an increase
in the price of almost all we buy in the
shape of spares and stores Also there
has been a large demand for skilled native
Inborn about rubber estates and tin mines
the Peninsula and this has raised the
Ence of wages of skilled native workmen
take it now that about I'd per yard
is about the limit of economy which can
b reached with our present fleet of
dredges
The Concession -I see no reason to
alter my previously expressed opinion as
to the value of your concession. It is true
that the average yield per yard is slightly
lower this year than last It will be
remembered that last year the two new
dredges were working the centre of the
ancient river bed discovered by Captain
vi les and it is only in the nature of
things that the centre of an ore channel
such as this should be higher than elsewhere
Nevertheless the rise in the price
of tin has more than compensated for
the slightly diminished value of the
ground
of Plant - During the year I have
prepared plans and specifications for new
dredges capable of dredging the deepest
ground in the concession They are design
is for a dredging depth of a. ft but will
a a pinch each 60ft If these dredges
are bought we shall also want a powerful'
si allow diatt steam tug, and for the t
have also prepared man s and specifications
